"Thing 13: Augmented & Virtual Reality"

I read three articles for this lesson.  The first "10 reasons to use Virtual Reality in the Classroom" by Ashley McCann.  This explains the top 10 reasons why virtual reality technology should be used in the class.  It can be designed to enable experimental learning, social learning, workplace training, etc.  Also it can be used for just pure entertainment like video games, traveling anywhere (without leaving the class), or swimming with whales. These are my favorite reasons from the list. 3) Experience different careers first hand. 7) Allow create there own VR content.  9) Explore how VR can be integrated into every subject area and curriculum.  10) Promote curiosity and wonder.

Another article I read was "Can virtual reality revolutionize education?" by Emma Kennedy.  This article goes into how students really enjoy VR lessons.  More than 6 million students in the U.S. have experienced VR lessons.  One of the main purposes of these lessons were to go on virtual field trips.  Another author (Jeremy Bailenson) stated that VR should supplement and not replace classroom learning.

I also went to a couple of VR app websites and watched some of their demonstration videos.  The first was the "Quiver Augmented Reality" app.  I thought this app was quite awesome with what it could do. It reminds me of the Pokemon Go app.  This app is more for elementary aged children.  The other app was "Google Translate".  This one will be very useful in the real world.  Especially if you are traveling to non English speaking countries.

I completed this assignment more because I have always had a personal curiosity of virtual reality.  At this time I do not feel that this would be useful in a mathematics classroom.

  1. Good to explore, even if you don't have a particular use for it at the moment!
